Oddly enthralling as their conversation's become to him -- in so much as he's able to hear it, at least -- he pries himself away, rushing over to the oven and managing to turn the heat down and pull the food out before anything is ruined or catches fire. It's a little overcooked, maybe, but he hopes not badly enough that they'll really notice. He even remembers, at the last minute, not to pull everything out with his bare hands.
