Jessica hadn't noticed her newfound shadow at first. She'd gone about her life as she normally would, taking Jaime to school in the mornings, spending the afternoon shopping, retrieving her daughter at three p.m., a trip to the park, then on home to have dinner and do all the domestic things she still secretly hated. As far as lives went, hers was pretty okay for now. The pair of them were safe, and that's what mattered.

It was on the way home from the park one day that Jaime tugged on her mother's coat sleeve, stood on her tiptoes, and whispered something about a man across the street who was following them.

Terror struck Jessica, right at her core. Her first thought? The government, finally come to take her in and take her away from Jaime. Panicked, she scooped up the child into her arms and waddled home in a rush, striding down the sidewalk as quickly as she could in her impractical high heels.
