There are some things, some distinctions from the other two, can could never change. Her height had always been a bit long, but it's only worse now. The light brown skin she wouldn't change even if she knew how, as long as it isn't grey it's a perfectly good disguise. And while she's trained her voice to sound different in a lot of ways, more like someone whose lived in this country for most of her life, there are still tells. The clear way she enunciates, the way she says the first syllable in "always".

And then, of course, there's the way she blushes slightly at Rose's answer. Inwardly, she chides herself. Outwardly, she says, "A little softer than most people realize, despite how grim they tended to be." Should she try to work "auxiliatory" into a sentence from here, or just wait to see if Rose does herself?

She covers her mouth with her hand to cover up a laugh. There's an impatient murmur in the crowd, but Rose isn't paying much attention. Some things never change, she thinks. She hopes this is Kanaya. She hasn't thought about how much she's missed her until now.

"They can be terribly mothering, too."

She places the rose down onto the table. "Fashionless, too. Except for a few."

That was enough to tell her what she needed to know. Rose didn't forget her. She closes her eyes and smiles with relief, maybe even gives a little prayer of thanks. She still doesn't know that anyone's actually listening, and it's weird to think about when she catches herself doing it, but it feels nice to spare the thought whether anyone receives it or not.

"We've all had to make sacrifices as we grew up. Some harder than others." But it's hardly the clothes she's talking about.

The grumbling behind her makes her uncomfortably aware that she's holding up the line. Something more personal will have to be arranged. "It's an excellent book, of course, but quite a godless one." Okay, maybe not exactly, but the kind she means don't tend to have tentacles. "You should spend more time in church." And she hands Rose a card for a shelter and orphanage in the Lower East Side, The House Of Our Blessed Virgin. The administrator named on it is Sister Mary Karmilla.

Rose looks very confused by this. She cannot, for the life of her, imagine Kanaya as a nun. This is almost very funny to her -- laughing out loud may seem rude, however, and so she refrains. Barely. She does give a very sage nod, however, and takes the card and pockets it.

"Thank you, sister. I'm afraid it has been at least thirteen years since my last confession, however. I haven't even been baptized."

It's quite the habit to get into, but she's never really worn a habit. She's never even taken the vows, she just bears the title. She's quietly judged for this on occasion. Her smirk now is hardly nun-like. They would probably toss her out of the church if they knew what motivated it, what company she's keeping, even the book she's having signed now.

"That only means that you have more to tell, I'm sure. And while I may not be a priest, still I would make myself available to hear all of it."

"I will give you a call."

This is entirely hilarious to her. Kanaya the alien vampire, living as a Sister. She is struggling not to laugh. Her fans probably think she is mocking poor Sister Mary Karmilla's religion.

"The good Lord always hears those who call Him by name. His humble servant should do no less."

If she's being insulted, the sister appears to take it like a champ. Her smile never fades, her heart feels like it's singing. A true martyr, taking her persecution with a pure joy. She takes her signed book and holds it close to her chest, giving Penny Trate a nod as she takes her leave.

"Do be careful in the meantime. Communing with dark gods can only lead to the most dreadful of fates."
