Norman smirked, stepping back and getting a firmer grip on his pistol. "Do you mean you? If you miss me that much, it's not too late. I can get you a pardon if you ask nicely."

His thumb flicked the hammer of the gun back with a click. "I'd rather not shoot you, besides. But Bellatrix; true power is on the horizon. It's beyond either side of this petty feud. But one must embrace the power if they're ever to wield it."

[curses]

Bellatrix sneered, her eyes flickering to the pistol before sliding back to his face. "Unfortunately, I've never been known to be nice."

She stood her ground, stance unwavering. She's all too familiar with guns now, and she wasn't certain she could block the bullet if he shoots. "You know that this war matters. And you know how important it is to be on the winning side -- and you're not on it."

[osreborn]

"This war doesn't matter. And I can assure you I never choose the wrong side. No matter what happens here, I'll be safe and comfortable. But can you be certain of the same thing? If you get caught today they'll put you under my care."

He cast a glance at her wand, refusing to react to it.

"So what comes next?"

[curses]

"Perhaps care isn't the right word to use in this situation."

She stepped forward, moving to press the tip of her wand into the hollow of his throat. "You don't think I'll kill you? It's as simple as uttering two words."

[osreborn]

"My loving care," he added, smirking. He swerved, moving to one side and then walking behind her. "Killing is such a simple act. There's hardly any art to it in war. You're a cog, that's all. One that's turning right in synch to their machine."

He withdrew his gun. "That's why I haven't shot you."

[curses]

She turned to face him, confusion flickering in her expression when she saw him withdraw his gun. Her wand remained pointed at him for another moment before she slowly lowered it. She stepped closer to him, looking up at his face.

"And what? You're here to fix me?"

[osreborn]

"Would that be so bad?"

He didn't aim the gun, but kept it lowered -- ready, in case -- as he glanced to her wand, then to her. His shoulders stiffened and he didn't move any closer, but allowed her to draw nearer.

[curses]

And she did draw nearer, close enough for him to feel her breath on his skin. She knew she was playing a dangerous game, but it was always that way between the two of them. "I can't imagine anything worse, darling."

[osreborn]

"Then what would you have us do?" He said softly, moving his free hand so as to stroke her cheek with one finger. "How do you think this war ends?"

[curses]

"We can stay and fight, or we can go our separate ways again." She leaned into his touch, the action a conscious movement. "The war can only end one way."

[osreborn]

He left his hand there for a moment, to linger, smiling slowly with a hint of vague wistfulness. Not sentiment, not really; simply memory. They had been a good team, if nothing else.

"I suppose I can look the other way once, for old time's sake. With the understanding that it's mutual."

[curses]

She returned the smile, and if it contained more sentiment than his, it didn't matter now.

"Don't worry, I won't curse you once your back is turned." She closed the gap between them, pressing her lips lightly against his. "It's really a pity that you're a different man than I thought you were."

[osreborn]

He cupped her chin for just a moment, deepening their kiss before he drew away, not re-holstering his gun but lowering the arm so it hung at his side.

"I hate to imagine what kind of man that was."

[curses]

Her wand had long since been forgotten, hanging loosely from her hand. "Someone borne of misguided idealism, perhaps." She smirks now, crossing her arms. "But you know me -- I've always thought the best of people."

[osreborn]

"It would serve you well to start thinking the worst of everyone. Then you'll always find yourself pleasantly surprised rather than disappointed."

He smiled and stepped back, glancing around at the building. He turned his head so that it was on his left side, so his vision of it was blocked by his eye-patch.

"Anyway. If asked about this incident, I suppose I didn't see anything."

[curses]

"That's not a healthy way to think," she replied sardonically, drawing a line through the ashes with the tip of her boot. It occurred to her that she could take advantage of his blind spot, but she won't. Not today.

"I'm not going to mention meeting you to anyone, either. They probably won't take kindly to the fact that I let you go unharmed."
