There are more important things now. Maybe sometime after this is all over, once we've put this current regime to rest, then I begin to think on such matters.

I won't.

so she relaxes ever so slightly and her smile brightens up, moving on from the melancholy to something a little more palatable.]
So is that fish almost done yet? I'm starving!
no subject
The rice isn't quite there yet, so you'll have to wait just a minute.
[ of course, that's when the kettle decides to whine, as well. ]

years spent living without utensils, can't be tamed]

Nepeta, please! Mind you manners.

Oh, come on. It's just us here! And it's not like I was going to take all of it.

A meal is like a setpiece, it must be composed in a manner that each component complements the other. To try one without the other is getting only half of the intended experience.

I don't know, I think that food being in my mouth is the most purrfect complement it could pawsibly have.

[ kanaya laughs lightly as he finishes setting the infuser in the kettle, the fish having been put on a plate that hasn't yet left her hand (she's tall enough it can stay out of reach this way, since everyone knows cats aren't allowed on the counter). then the skillet is in the sink and she's checking on the rice again. ]

[having finally acknowledged that she's not getting any delicious food in advance, Nepeta begins rifling through the drawers for cutlery so that she can begin setting the table. if they're going to be unnecessarily fancy then she's going to help god dammit!!!]

[ the rice seems to be finished, so she goes ahead and scoops out a bit to give it a sniff, but not a taste. hard to taste test when you can taste it, so she hopes everything's in order as she scoops out a bit more onto the plate and moves it toward the table. ]
The tea still needs a few minutes more to steep.

[lately means since they were all parted, but it's the sort of understatement that Nepeta's found herself making more and more frequently. it was better to soften the reality of her life, she's found; the truth is less important when it comes to her when the price of it is friends' peace of mind.
the cutlery clinks against the porcelain of the plates as she circles the table and sets things in their place]

[ it's been about the same amount of time since kanaya had done any sort of sketching or truly involved sewing. the plain black dress she wore now betrayed how large a hit her fashion sense had taken from both a change in priorities and a need to hide her identity.
she brings nepeta's plate and the teapot to the table before taking her seat. ]

[Nepeta waits until Kanaya is seated before reaching for the teapot, pouring herself a steaming cup with the barely contained expression of someone who has been waiting a very long time for this. her hands dance to the sugar bowl, picking up far too much to dump into her tea; even through all of the disasters, some things never change]

I should hope we wouldn't, but knowing the different directions our lives have taken us, sometimes an added incentive can be helpful.
no subject
[the tea is delicious, made all the more tasty from the years spent without it. Nepeta inhales the aromatic steam, letting the cup linger close to her face before placing it back down again]
no subject
[ she's put too much work into establishing a human identity that wouldn't be suspected as an import. having that compromised could throw a wrench into all of the work she does outside of it. ]
